GMP Certification
Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) requires several industries to implement Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). These industries include the food, dietary supplement, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries. Manufacturers in these industries may obtain a GMP certification to demonstrate their compliance to these regulations.
GMP regulations are designed to ensure the health and safety of the public by requiring the implementation of a product safety and quality management system. Failure to comply can result in severe consequences. Our GMP certification consultants provide the legal, professional and hands-on guidance that you need to ensure compliance to these regulations.
What does it mean to be GMP certified?
GMP compliance is required by the FDA; however, GMP certification is not required by the FDA.
Occassionally the FDA will perform random audits to verify compliance, but these audits are rare. For this reason, buyers of your product will often want some kind of objective evidence that you are compliant. In order to provide this, you can have an independent third party auditor perform an audit and "certify" that you are compliant.
GMP certification often results in more customers because customers trust that you are compliant when you provide your GMP certificate.
GMP requirements apply to manufacturing facilities, but they also apply to other participants in the product supply chain, including contract manufacturers and storage and distribution companies.
Third party auditing companies are often called "certification bodies." Certification bodies audit against their own accredited gmp certification program and their own GMP standard. An applicant must meet their GMP program requirements in order to pass their audit.
Certify Consulting provides GMP consulting services and can help you achieve GMP compliance in order to pass a GMP audit or an FDA inspection. Certification Options and Factors
Many different types of GMP certification exist. Each certification body operates from a standard (a set of requirements) that must be met in order to achieve their certification. When choosing a GMP standard and certification body, consider the following factors:
- Customer preferences and requirements
- Scope and content of the standard
- Reputation of the certification body
- Accreditation of the certification body
- Frequency of the ongoing surveillance audits
- Cost of the various certification schemes
- Recognition of the standard by global or regional institutions
Dietary Supplement GMP Certifications
UL has partnered with The Natural Products Association (NPA) to create a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Certification Program. The NPA was the first organization to offer a third-party GMP certification program for the manufacturing of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients.
Under NSF’s leadership, the GRMA is developing consensus-based GMP standards for dietary supplements, cosmetics/personal care products and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs by combining retailer and regulatory requirements into a single accredited GMP standard.
USP's commitment to protecting public health through standards and related programs spans nearly 200 years.
