What is needed to achieve SQF certification?

To obtain a SQF certification, a company must meet the requirements of the applicable SQF Code. Each code has different requirements. Some codes are for primary producers, others for the food manufacturers, and others for distributors and so forth. The most current versions of the code can be found on the SQF website. A GMP consultant can help you to determine which code applies to you and how to meet its requirements.

In general, the following elements must be in place in order to pass a SQF audit and receive certification:

Implement a food safety and quality management system

Develop and implement a system for managing and controlling the safety and quality of your food products, including procedures for documentation, validation, and testing.

Conduct a hazard analysis

Identify potential hazards in your food manufacturing process and implement measures to control them.

Implement prerequisite programs

Implement programs to control environmental factors, such as pest control, sanitation, and hygiene, that can affect food safety.

Implement a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) system

Implement a systematic approach to identifying and controlling food safety hazards.

Train employees

Ensure that employees are trained on the SQF Code and best practices for food safety and quality.

Document your processes

Ensure that all processes and procedures are properly documented and that records are kept to demonstrate compliance with the SQF Code.

Schedule an audit

Schedule an audit with a SQF-approved certification body to evaluate your company’s compliance with the SQF Code.

Prepare for the audit

Prepare for the audit by ensuring that all relevant documentation and records are in order and that employees are familiar with the SQF Code and the audit process.

Obtain certification

If the certification body finds that your company is in compliance with the SQF Code, it will award an SQF certification. When the certificate is awared it is valid for a certain period of time, usually 3 years, after which the company must undergo another audit to maintain its certification. Also, each year the company will be required to undergo a surveillance audit. If any major issues are found during the surveillance audit, then the certification may be revoked before its three-year expiration date.
